Bridging barriers in sustainability research: Α review from sustainability science to life cycle sustainability assessment

Sustainability science (SS) has emerged to foster inter- and transdisciplinary research practices the creation of new, robust, actionable knowledge for navigating sustainability transitions. However, whether paradigm emerging SS permeated relevant body integrate with subfield assessment (SA) is an open question. Aiming investigate enhance interdisciplinary communication in theory practice, we comparatively study three literature bodies: SS, SA Life Cycle Assessment (LCSA). By combining conceptual analysis, bibliometric social network systematic content review, explore how these fields are can be further interrelated. Our analysis indicates that hardly been embraced by scholars. There however few SAs have attempted put concepts into practice perform both scientifically- socially-robust. Extensive applications needed address current limitations understand feasibility outcomes SS-inspired SA. Reflecting on empirical studies, conclude LCSA as currently applied cannot a holistic framework sustainability. An integration life cycle- other methods transparent socially-embedded frameworks needed, which will enabled through collaboration among LCSA/SA paper gives insights towards this direction.
